Updated: Sep 6, Living in South Korea as an expat can be hard, especially if you have just moved to the country and are new to its culture and language. While life in the big cities such as Seoul or Busan tends to be more welcoming to foreigners, living outside of the main cities can be especially difficult for many. Finding simple services such as house cleaning, moving services, food delivery can be a headache, even though back home these are simple services that you would normally get.
It is even harder looking for services that are more complicated, such as document apostilles, looking for kindergartens, preparing birthday parties, looking for repair services, online shopping and many more. At Wonderful, we believe in providing you with the freedom to live as you would like to live, without the constraints of cultural or language barriers. We have spent years helping expats and foreigners with hundreds of thousands of requests in Korea and would like to share our guide to the 10 top requests to make with Wonderful, when settling down in Korea.
Food Delivery. For most people travelling, food is the most important thing one must know how to get. Korea has come a long way in making it easier for foreigners to order food. However, many times the apps are in Korean, and in certain regions outside of the big cities, they simply do not deliver.

My Korean co-teacher once told me that she had never met a gay person. The gay scene is still quite hidden in Korea, even though this year marked the 13th Queer Culture Festival in Seoul. I recall meeting one gay guy when I was an exchange student at the Korea National University of Arts. One gay guy at an art school?!
New to Korea, single and ready to mingle? Korea is known for taking its couple culture to the next level: couple clothes, couple shoes, couple rings — Koreans go all out. Remember my words: Korean Ajummas older ladies rule the country. Women are the unofficial leaders of the families and the older they are, the more power they seem to have over their offspring. Koreans tend to have lots of respect for their parents and family members and topics such as moving in together, planning to get married and especially going abroad are hot topics that need to be addressed wisely and with caution.
Try to win the parents, and especially the mothers, over by helping to cook, wash the dishes, praising their food, drinking alcohol with them or simply watching TV together. Korean parents need to get the feeling that you want to become part of this family — if you are planning on doing so. This is a big part of Korean culture and cannot be avoided.

Currently, there are around two million foreigners living in South Korea, most of whom live in Seoul. Most of them are here for business, and the majority of expats from an English-speaking country work as teachers or are in the military.
Dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Coffee Meets Bagel reign supreme when it comes to expat dating. There’s a huge misconception that Places like Seoul, South Korea, or Heidelberg, Germany. I have had the best dating.
When I first arrived in South Korea eight months ago, I never considered the dating opportunities here—or their lack thereof. I thought I would be in a location that had lots of foreigners and that I would find at least one guy who I could date. As it turns out, that is not the case. The situation in Korea is like this—the foreign guys are either in a relationship, only looking to hook up, socially awkward, or only looking for Korean women.
I am also a woman of color and even in this day and age, there are still guys who will count me out based on my skin color. To make matters even worse, I live in a very small town and Seoul is three hours away. My location makes dating that much harder. Again, the guys were socially awkward. After exchanging one or two messages, the guys wanted to send me dirty pictures of themselves naked. So I decided OkCupid was not for me. I have come to the conclusion that my time and experience in Korea will be more about traveling and making friends than about dating.

The weekend after I got home from Japan I went to Cakeshop with some friends. We were all dancing and having fun. I took a break from dancing and gaze fell on this ridiculously tall man, beautifully dressed, with exceptional dreadlocks. He came over, we started dancing, then it was time for us to head home as we were tired. I said good bye to him but not before he asked for my number. Some men you dance and make out with and leave it at that; he was one of those, a club guy with no potential to be in my life.
I gave him my number, patted him on the chest good bye, and ran up the stairs to meet my friends. We texted for a few days, and when he suggested we become Facebook friends, I said no. The texting ended after that.
What this meant was that there were certain locals in Korea who preferred socializing with foreigners, but only as a novelty. In less politically correct terms, this typically referred to a Korean man wanting to have sex with an All-American-looking woman. There are many Koreans male and female who do not subscribe to the homogeneous ideologies of this small nation.
This was the absolute worst date I have ever been on. I haven’t been on too many but this one was the absolute worst, especially the person I was dating before.
I know I said something similar in my previous post. So I decided to sign up for a few dating apps here in Korea and do exactly that! The ranks go Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum. I did my ranking in the wee hours of the night, on purpose, and came in a high Gold, Low Platinum so I ended up Gold overall. I got all kinds of hot messes matched with me. Most of the matches were terrible. From them there was ONE that I thought would be cool. Turns out he is the type of guy who looks awesome in pictures because he always wears sunglasses which make him look years younger.
As soon as the sunglasses come off, he looks like he has not slept in weeks, months, or perhaps years. Ok that sounds bad as well. He is very kind. While personality wise he is the type of guy I would really give a chance, his schedule is a deal breaker. He works a lot to avoid being lonely and he is afraid of starting a relationship. We had that talk about 2 weeks in.
